Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) remains steadfast in its bullish outlook on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, even as concerns mount over slowing demand.
CEO Lisa Su reaffirmed her confidence, underscoring the company’s commitment to AI-driven growth.
"The need for compute continues to be immense," Su said. "We see that throughout all of our customers globally, and we're going to continue to invest strongly in this area because I think this is the single most important technology of the last 50 years."
Backing these words with action, AMD completed its $4.9 billion acquisition of ZT Systems, a major provider of AI and general-purpose compute infrastructure for hyperscale customers. The acquisition enhances AMD’s ability to deliver end-to-end AI solutions, combining its CPUs, GPUs, networking silicon, and open-source ROCm software.
Expanding Partnerships and Innovation
AMD also announced the deployment of its 5th Gen EPYC processors on Oracle (ORCL) Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Compute E6 shapes. These advanced chips promise a 2x improvement in cost-to-performance compared to the previous generation. The collaboration highlights AMD's strategy to expand its footprint in cloud computing and further solidify its position in AI infrastructure.

Despite the competitive landscape, AMD continues to secure strategic partnerships, counting Microsoft (MSFT) as a key customer. The completion of the ZT Systems acquisition is expected to be accretive to non-GAAP results by the end of 2025, further reinforcing the company’s confidence in AI’s long-term growth.
Navigating Uncertainty and Tariffs
While AMD remains optimistic, challenges loom. Tariff uncertainty, particularly potential semiconductor tariffs proposed by former President Trump, poses a risk to the semiconductor supply chain. AMD, which sources chips from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM), could face increased costs if tariffs materialize.
"I do think that there could be some short-term impacts," Su acknowledged. "But we are big supporters of U.S. manufacturing and resilient supply chains."
Despite broader sell-offs in tech stocks, AMD's approach reflects resilience. Shares are down 15% year-to-date, slightly outperforming Nvidia's (NVDA) nearly 20% decline. However, Su’s long-term conviction in AI adoption remains a driving force behind AMD’s strategic investments.
The Road Ahead
While AMD’s first-quarter sales forecast of a 7% sequential decline has left some investors wary, analysts suggest that the company’s investments in AI infrastructure and strategic acquisitions will yield long-term benefits.
"Enterprises are just at the very early innings of adoption," Su said. "And frankly, they need more help from folks like ourselves."
As AI technology evolves, AMD’s continued focus on innovation, partnerships, and infrastructure development positions it as a significant player in the AI race. While market volatility persists, the company’s unwavering belief in the transformative power of AI is clear.
